For my use I have yet to come across a java applet that I 'need'
to run. And it is a netscape problem, not a FBSD problem. In the
past when I used Linux Red Hat 5.2 and 6 I experienced the same
problems with it there, and even more so than in FreeBSD when I
do turn on javascript.
