Right now, the kernel is a.out; it's not clear if we're going to be ready for an ELF kernel or not. (Personally I think it'd be a good thing, but we need some more items first.) The kzip strategy can be made to work with both a.out and ELF, but the latter will need some assistance from someone that has an interest in making it work. If we go for an ELF kernel, but don't get kzip sorted in time, then the installation floppy kernel will have to be a.out.
