IIRC, Matrox requires you to compile in the mga_hal module into XFree86.
Check /var/log/XFree86.0.log for a message like this:

(EE) MGA: Failed to load module "mga_hal" (module does not exist, 0)

There is documentation on how to do this on the Matrox driver CD.
