Subject:   Changing bit depths

How would I go about changing the default bit depth in X?  I tried
changing the 8 to 16 in /etc/XF86Config but startx balked because it
couldn't find a definition for the default bit depth (8).

Any ideas will be gratefully appreciated...thanks!
