Yea, at least they were made by people that knew what they do, with no
shortcuts, squashed every bit and cycle out of the hardware, just as
in Atari, Commodore, Spectrum, Amiga, etc.. in fact FreeBSD comes from
that era and mindset, this is why I LOVE FreeBSD :-)

Right now, even in a really big powerful dominating corporations,
people are re-inventing the wheel, in a bad way, they call it
"innovation", no insight into how things are and were made, no
optimization, no art of engineering, just focused on generating
products quickly and taking over competitors by destruction. Sad.
