I don't know. If I look at the previous attempts to use flavors. It seems  
hard to keep it backwards compatible. But not all patches of all efforts  
are available via the PRs. So I'm not sure what the real problems are with  
flavouring.
I'm especially interested in the patches of  
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=237122 (by sunpoet) to  
look at and learn what has already been tried.
