Why not use the pop3d included with imap-uw port. Handles multiple authenticators and pam or you can write your own although I haven't done that. I am using both pop3 and imap4 on vlv (very low volume) with the SSLBUILD install per the documentation and it appears to be both stable and fast. It's a mystery to me why more people (who use imap-uw) don't use it or at least don't brag about it. What are you using for (possibly secure) mta that doesn't require user accounts to exist?
