I lookafter a Sun Server running the SPARC version of Solaris. I also got
the free Solaris so I could try it on a PC. SPARC Solaris runs fine on a
Dual 400MHz SPARC-II system. x86 Solaris ran like a dog on a P233.

Never felt the need to look at OpenBSD...

As for Linux/FreeBSD....

I've just setup a machine at home running DOS/Win98/FreeBSD 3.2/RedHat Linux
6.0. IMHO FreeBSD is definately the better OS, and is much easier to
install. However, when it comes to setting up X, Linux is nicely setup by
default - with FreeBSD it takes a bit of effort but appears to be faster.

As for hardware for FreeBSD.... My little development network at home is
based on a FreeBSD server running Samba, Apache and MySQL. It outperforms a
P233 running Windows NT. Which is not what you'd expect when it's a
486SX2-50 with 16MB RAM.

So, FreeBSD or Linux? Well, what do you want to do with this machine?

For server type work go with FreeBSD.

For desktop type work go with Linux.
