If you've got X available at all, all i needed to do was running xrdb
(so the cpp got called).  This happened from xdm itself, as well as
(after killing xdm's xrdb run off) from my ~/.xsession.

I think just writing a test case doing 1000 popen()'s gets you a good
chance of triggering the problem.
