Often times mallow debugging is responsible for these kinds of things.
I've turned it off for each 5.x release so far, and I just turned it
off for RELENG_5 today.  Try updating your sources if you are tracking
RELENG_5, or turn off malloc debugging via:

ln -s aj /etc/malloc.conf
