I thinks it's much easier than that (that is, it worked for me, YMMV). 1) Build standard apache port (don't install) 2) Build php (follow instructions in php INSTALL and README) 3) add configuration lines to Configure in apache src dir; ./Configure 4) cd back to Apache main dir (.../work/apache-1.2.x) 5) make 6) back to /usr/ports/www/apache; make install takes about 5 min and works beautifully.
