No, FreeBSD is a completely separate operating system.

It can co-exist with other operating systems, yes.  And yes, it will have to
reside in its own partition(s).  You have to be a bit careful during the
installation procedure not to clobber your old OS, but it's not too
difficult.  Lots of docs are available, see http://www.freebsd.org/
