cool. at least you admit you've tried ALMOST everything. try this:
1) customize your kernel to support device pcm (if it doesn't
already).
2) cd /dev && ./MAKEDEV snd0 (or snd1 if snd0 doesn't work)
3) cat /dev/sndstat and it should show your sb card at the pcm device.
4) if you get positive results from step #3, try running "mixer"
(iirc, the path might be /usr/sbin/mixer). when running mixer, you
should get a list of current settings for your sound device.
5) if you get positive results from both #3 and 4, things look good.
go install a wav/mp3 player and take it for a test drive. good luck
and keep on rockin'.
