No, you have to install before you reboot.  There's nothing surprising
about that, but you appear to think that after installation you'll
automatically be running the new kernel.  That's not the case:
installation just moves the new kernel to /kernel and the old kernel
(if it exists) to /kernel.old.  You still need to reboot to run it.
