The best source of information is our Documentation Project Primer for new contributors : http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/fdp-primer/index.html We use DocBook SGML DTD for the markup, and DSSSL stylesheets to transform it into various output formats such as HTML and PDF. We then have an extensive makefile setup to automatically build all of our documentation.
