You have sent this question to a mailing list for the FreeBSD
operating system, not linux or linux-mandrake.  While some
linux's do ship with a BSD-based version of lpr & friends, you
probably would get better results asking on a linux-specific
mailing list.

I doubt you have to rebuild the kernel to use some other
version of lpd.  You might want to try to find the 'rpm'
for a package called lprNG (or LPRng, I forget... :-).  I
do not use this, but I know many people do.

I could help with generic lpd questions, but my guess is that
your real problem could be linux-specific, so you might want
to search elsewhere for additional help.
