Subject: Samba, NT and Deskjet 890C driver woes (long)

I've been running Samba on my FBSD3.2 box for some time now and
tonight decided it would be nice to hang the printers off the back of
it. I'd really like to decommission our NT server which is currently
the print server.

I connected our Deskjet 890C to the BSD box and could send stuff to it
via /dev/lpt0, thus the physical connection and the kernel config
seems fine. It also shows up when browsing the Windows network as a
printer named 'lp'.

I connected to it and selected the 890C driver, but when I tried to
print the test page it came up with an error:

'Test page failed to print. Would you like to view the print trouble
shooter for assistance? Attempt to release mutex not owned by caller.'

Similarly when trying to bring up the printer Properties box I get the
error:

'Function address 0xNNNNNNNN cause protection fault. (exeception code
0xc0000005) Some or all property page(s) may not be displayed.'

(BTW: They're not my spelling mistakes - it actually appeared like
that on screen!)

Then it opened up the default property dialog without any of the HP
additions (such as the About tab).

I installed TCP/IP printing and created an appropriate port (X.X.X.X
lp). Same problem - couldn't print, couldn't open property pages.

As a last resort I created a 'Generic / Text Only' printer - it worked
via TCP/IP printing! I changed it to print via Samba - again, it
worked!!

Suspecting that the HP drivers could be the cause of the problem I
installed the generic Deskjet drivers from the NT CD. It worked
perfectly (albeit in black and white). Being more adventurous I
installed an 855C driver as it was the closest model in the list -
that worked with colour to boot!

So, after all that waffling - has anyone else successfully installed
an 890C via Samba with the HP supplied drivers (Version 12.2 for NT)
and if so how the heck did you do it? I don't fancy the idea of using
drivers for a lower-spec printer just so that it'll work with FreeBSD.

It's *highly* unlikely that it's FBSD that's at fault - rather NT or
HP).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Rich.
