On older AT motherboards, it is possible to blow the keyboard controller on the motherboard by hot plugging a keyboard in. With PS/2 devices, it is possible to fry the keyboard when plugging it in with power on. However, on our servers the downtime to power down to plug a keyboard in is _far_ more expensive than the GBP8 for a new keyboard.
