I think he might me des vs md5.    

Michael, what does ls -l on  /usr/lib/libcrypt.so show?

ls -l /usr/lib/libcrypt.so
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  14 Feb 29 14:01 /usr/lib/libcrypt.so -> libdescrypt.so

Are the linux boxes uses des or md5?
