For the archives: Rebuilding (and re-installing) boot0 from the
sources on the 6.1-RELEASE CD using the default options (no
/etc/make.conf) fixes the problem.  I have no idea why the boot0 on
the CD doesn't work for me (though the two boot0's are definitely
different).
