Donald,
I'm am by no means a unix guru but you might want to start checking for intrusions into your
system.
This site will help:
http://www.cert.org/nav/recovering.html

Hopefully I'm just being paranoid and nothing happened. But I would definitely start there and
eliminate the possiblity.
