 * From: Nik Clayton <nik@nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk>

 * Doesn't apply. I'm not asking that the installation directory change,
 * just the directory in which it's held in the CVS repository.

I did not realize that you were proposing to make the names in the CVS
repository inconsistent with the installation directory. Why do you
want to do that?

 * Agreed. You've done more research on this than I have. The one thing
 * I have dug up that agrees with this is the IANA assignments document
 * that suggests "ja_JP.EUC-JP" (the URL of which I mailed out earlier).
 *
 * My preferences, therefore, are (in order)
 *
 *     ja_JP.EUC-JP
 *     ja_JP.eucJP
 *     ja_JP.ujis
 *
 * and I'm very strongly in favour of the first option.

Note that currently none of the above are officially supported locale
names for FreeBSD.

 * We can use symlinks in the *installed* directories so that all of
 * the above (and more) work. However, for the CVS repositories I would
 * like to follow standards wherever possible.

"ja" is an acceptable locale name, and is therefore suitable both as
installation and repository directory names.

 * Why? I'm prepared to put in one kludge in the Makefile to recognise
 * a LOCALE that doesn't match a directory name, but it's the profusion of
 * kludges that we would have now that's the problem. I'm also prepared
 * to 'police' this very thoroughly, to ensure that nothing else like it
 * sneaks in.

We can make the directory name match a locale by making "ja" an
official alias of ja_JP.EUC (for now -- will be changed to eucJP or
EUC-JP later).

 * A half year is not acceptable for this -- I've got a lot of stuff sitting
 * in the pipe waiting to be committed that wants a nice, clean, logical,
 * directory structure.
 *
 * In 6 months time we'll have at least three new translation teams working
 * on the docs (French, Hungarian, and Malay). That's almost certainly three
 * times the effort, particularly since the French team have done a superb
 * effort in the amount of translation they've done.

We're only talking about the name of toplevel for Japanese docs. You
can move stuff inside (book, articles, etc.) all you want. We also
don't intend to poke our heads into other people's businesses, so go
ahead and change the French and Hungarian and other directories to
whatever names they want.
