Oops.  I think it might be related in a way to 
http://docs.FreeBSD.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=678965+0+current/freebsd-current
I think the loader now needs the kernel symbols available at boot
time.

Have you tried making everything you can a kld & loading it after root 
is mounted?  The nics and the filesystems are the easy part.  And
there is always netbooting...
