I got this exact same problem just a few hours ago.  I did a portupgrade on
XFree86, it started compiling but then died with the above error.  However, I
was more lucky because portupgrade realised an error occured and duly
reinstalled the backed up version of XFree86-4.1.

Don't know what's up with -lGLU, but I hope it gets fixed soon.
