Before you recompiled, did the iwi0 device work?  Once booted, can you 
show the output of "vmstat -i"?  Also, can you post a verbose dmesg 
somewhere?

It might also be useful to re-add things back into the kernel, and figure 
out which device removal actually triggers this.
