I am having a similar problem with my Compaq Armada M700
I have 'device pcm' in the kernel config.

After the new kernel (with 'device pcm') is installed, xmms and mpg321
report (visually) that they are working but no audio is heard.

Win2k tells me that the card is: "ESS Maestro2E PCI Audio Drive"
Location: "PCI bus 0, device 8, function 0"

Thanks in advance,
-hop
