I don't know how much online info there is, but there are several good
books out that explain this mechanism.  X is pretty platform-independent
in places, and these mechanisms are in that realm.

I have one listing here:

``X Window System Toolkit'' by Paul Asente and Ralph Swick, from Digital
Press.  It's the spec for Xt and may have some info in it.
