Another question (or two :) . . . which version of FreeBSD
did this work with; when it was NOT working, did you see a
simultaneous capability to ping localhost sucessfully, but
get a message saying "sendto: Host is down" for any other ping
attempt?

That's what I'm seeing now. The interface comes up
with "ifconfig zp0 inet 198.178.173.1 link0 netmask 255.255.255.0"
and pings localhost, but gives "Sendto: Host is down" when pinging
any other host, including my default route(an ISDN modem). The
Etherlink III green light (indicating network activity) never
lights at all.

	I'm going nuts!! I've installed v2.2.6-Release and I
know this used to work (I do have an Etherlink III 5c589 PCMCIA)

Can anyone else tell me 'wassup' before I give up and try linux?
I really do need FreeBSD or BSDI(no got :) for some Smartgate
development I'm beginning.

Anyway, all responses are GREATLY appreciated,
Alan
