As Dan stated, ls will do it now... from the man page, check out
the -G flag. There's a gnuls available as well.

}Color directory listings has nothing to do with the OS
}you're running.
}It all depends on the "ls" program.  FreeBSD has
}historically not had a
}color ls, and you had to install either the "colorls" or
}"linuxls" from
}ports.  FreeBSD 4.1 and later versions now have an ls that
}can be told
}to print in color, though.
