Is it a PnP card ? Mine is a 3C509B and dmesg output is :

ep0: <3Com 3C509B-TPO EtherLink III (PnP)> at port 0x210-0x21f irq 9 on=
 isa0
ep0: Ethernet address 00:20:af:c4:92:fc

Try to disable the PnP stuff if you can.
