If you're not running NATD (Network Address Translation Daemon), you need to
be.  I'm a newbie as well and don't know all of the details but if you
search the mailing list archive for NATD or IP Masquerading (as it's
sometime incorrectly called), you may find some pointers.

Welcome aboard and good for you for recompiling the kernel.  You may have to
do it again with some added options to get NATD working.
