Finally ive managed to solve this problem by copying /usr/lib/libm.so.3 from the backup server onto the corrupt box. this fixed all the problems i was having ......(why oh why didnt I try this earlier) my only problem now is I cant understand why this file may have been changed. The last thing done before the failure was to install compat4x from the ports.
