Also, as a followup, we also spoke about ridding the rest of the headers
etc of __attribute__.  It is easy to provide a compiler-dependent
implementation of __unused, __printflike(), etc, but practically impossible
to do #defines to map __attribute__ onto non-gcc compiler features.
