The AirPort cards are just Lucent WaveLAN cards with the antenna portion removed and replaced with connections for the built-in antennas that are found on compatible machines. In fact, on the Apple AirPort base station, they use real Lucent WaveLAN "Turbo 11Mb Silver" cards (now from the Orinoco family), and if you open it up you can replace them with something that does better encryption (such as the WaveLAN Gold).
