Well, your ISP may expect PAP or CHAP login instead of command-line login.
How did you connect under Windows?  If you just entered your username and
password in Dial-Up Networking, then remove the set login line from your
ppp.conf, and just set authname and authkey to their appropriate values
(i.e. your ISP username and password respectively).
