Why on earth are you putting them there?

Unpack them by hand.  They're just gzipped tarfiles; you want to be in
/usr when you do it.  Start with X312doc.tgz and read the files 
it puts in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc for details on which other
ones you want.
