Sounds like FreeBSD is installed and working properly, just that XFree86 is not (X is not FreeBSD, it's seperate).
You should run /stand/sysinstall and then choose Configure and then XFree86, That will give you the option to configure your mouse first, then X. On the mouse, if it's PS2, then choose auto for type and PS2 for port and then hit Enable, you should then get a arrow cursor that will move around on the screen. If it's a serial mouse (like mine) then choose Auto for type (to begin with) then choose Com1 for port, then Enable. If it still doesn't move, try another port (still on type auto). You may have to try several combinations of type and port. My brandless, old serial mouse (actually mitsumi) works on type auto and port com1. After the mouse is working then you'll be able to set up X, just the correct video card from the list (Hopefully yours is on the list), enter the correct numbers for the monitor refresh rates, choose resolution and color depth, and hit Okay to test it. I've been able to get a dozen misellenaeous old monitors and video cards to work.
Alot of setting up X is trial and error, just keep trying differant combinations until it works, it usually doesn't take too long to get it working properly.

Good luck,
Chip
