You type about:config into the address bar :-)

You'll also probably find the key you are looking for doesn't exist.

See Boris' post also in this thread for the solution.

I also needed this info and can confirm that the 1st listed solution in the 
linked thread (the one which creates/edits user.js) does work for me using 
Firefox 1.5.0.3 although I used kmail rather than thunderbird
