I don't have access to the NAT/firewall box. I was logging in from a laptop
running FreeBSD to a server runing FreeBSD. I adjusted the keepidle on
the laptop to 180000 (3 minutes) so it sends a keepalive probe  before
the NAT entry expires. Tha solved the problem.
