Hm..  This seems weird.  Why are you patching both configure and
configure.in?  If you need to patch configure.in, guesses are that
configure would get recreated, meaning you changes will be lost.  Or am
I missing something here?  (Admittedly, I haven't look at actual diffs
yet.)
