The subject says it all. I've seen warnings over the years about the UNION fs not really being usable. Has the situation changed? Is it safe to use? I would like to share my "/usr/local" partition with a test machine (mounted read-only) and would also like some users on the test machine to be able to add stuff from the ports, and play around a bit (they are training). Other than mounting my "/usr/local" as /usr/local_1 on the test machine and modifying paths, ldconfig paths and so on, the UNION fs looks like the perfect solution (if it is reliable...). Any ideas?
