Subject: Is UNION fs still broken?

The subject says it all. I've seen warnings over the years about the UNION
fs not really being usable. Has the situation changed? Is it safe to use?

I would like to share my "/usr/local" partition with a test machine
(mounted read-only) and would also like some users on the test machine to
be able to add stuff from the ports, and play around a bit (they are
training). Other than mounting my "/usr/local" as /usr/local_1 on the test
machine and modifying paths, ldconfig paths and so on, the UNION fs looks
like the perfect solution (if it is reliable...).

Any ideas?

Antonio
