[picking a random message to reply to] Isn't there a few problem with ACPI machines running non-ACPI-aware OSes? One thing that makes me want to upgrade my -stable workstation to -current is exactly that. (Of course, there are ACPI patches for -stable now, but I need -current anyways). The annoyance is that my box can't turn itself off via software. No big deal, in itself, but annoying. The biggest problem is when the BIOS enters a suspend mode. FreeBSD puts the clock back to the time it suspended when it resumes, so in short, FreeBSD just disappears in the void while a suspend is in action. There are a few other annoyances such as this, I think. It's mostly a jugement call wether we can support the most machines "out of the box" without ACPI than with it. Also, if we need more test hardware, 5.0 is exactly the beast to provide testing for a wider audience, IMHO. People are aware that 5.0 is not yet -stable and will not be for a while. Let's use that to test ACPI a bit more widely. If it fails the test, let's just keep it as an option when we branch 5.x and put it on by default on 6.x. Just my 2 cents, A.
