edit /etc/ttys
you'll find a line that reads:
ttyv8	"/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon"	xterm	off  secure
change to:
ttyv8	"/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon"	xterm	on  secure

that should do it!
