5.x: developers only, this is the "current" branch.
4.x: most people, this is the latest "stable" branch.
3.x: only if you have a good reason not to use 4.x, IMO.  this branch is the
previous "stable" branch and isn't maintained as much as 4.x is.  One reason
I can think of is if you have old hardware which is no longer supported in
4.x onwards.

You'll probably want 4.x.
