Well, I can't tell you when there will be a 4.0 release.  But from what I've
read it won't be for a while.

I'm not sure if you know the difference or not from the content of your
e-mail but there is a 4.0-CURRENT, which is the 'bleeding edge' of FreeBSD.
3.3-STABLE is the up-to-date stable version, and 3.3-RELEASE was a
"snapshot" of STABLE at the moment that those cds were released.
