This name sounds really familiar...I'm trying to figure out if I know 
him or not.  Must have seen his name on some other code.

I'm not even going to pretend to understand that.

For now, I think I'm going to to stick with what I've got (because I can
at least understand it...even though it's not as compact as what kjahds
wrote).  But if someone finds a problem with it, one that cannot be
fixed easily, I'll revisit the thing you pointed me to.  How's that?
