Ahh.. didn't even think about that, but yes, DAT drives are hot running.
I always place them in the the case such that there is dead air under
them and preferable right in line with the power supply air inlets so
that you get good air flow to the tape drive.  I never place another
device immediatly below or above a DAT drive unless I absolutely must.

The down side of this placement is that it likes to suck all the room
dust through your dust sensitive tape drive :-(.

Also note that dual fan cases with one fan in front pushing air and one
fan in the power supply pulling air actually cause very poor air flow
to occur accross the drive bays.  I usually reverse the front fan and
have it blow as well thus reducing the problem of direct air flow from
the inlet fan to the outlet fan with little else getting cooled.

[I actually just prefer single fan cases with a decent fan in the
power supply since it eliminates the bad air flow I have seen in so
many cases that use a push/pull fan combo.]  Or if it is to be multiple
fans they should all be mounted in the rear of the case blowing outward,
I like negative pressure dust sucking monsters, so much infact the MSE/800
I worked on for Rolm Milspec had 8 EGG variable speed fans in it that
could push 2000CFM combined and vacumn a 6 square foot area infront of
the machine for you :-)  If you wanted to post a note about machine
status you just wrote it on a 8.5" x 11" sheet and hurled in front of
the machine, it would get sucked onto the front and stay...  :-)
