mostly is your nic/driver support certan media than you can see it with dmesg 
or with ifconfig itself
than you could use ifconfig "device" "media" "mediaopt" 
this how it looks voor a 100mbit realtek 
#ifconfig rl0 media  100baseTX mediaop full-duplex
if you want to disable full-duplex than you must use "-mediaopt"
you can also put those in rc.conf if you need to have your nic in a certan 
mode at boot ...
