 Do you also see this behavior if recdir is set to a non-existent directory?  I 
 could not replicate the problem with
 
 env NEXINIT="set recdir=/no/such" /usr/bin/vi
 
 it did print an error message, but then when I hit enter the error message 
 went away and the screen looked perfectly normal.  I deleted the top line, and 
 the line got properly deleted.
 
 Are you sure you didn't have a termcap problem?

 Control-L didn't work?
