Thanks Wayne. Someone else emailed me privately also.  My problem was
due to using rxvt instead of xterm. Using xterms again:

11:18AM  up 76 days, 22:40, 3 users, load averages: 0.30, 0.44, 0.47
USER     TTY FROM              LOGIN@  IDLE WHAT
cao      p1  :0.0             10:58AM    18 bash
cao      p2  :0.0             10:58AM     - /usr/local/bin/emacs -nw /home/cao/
cao      p3  :0.0             11:17AM     - w
